Elizabeth N. Saunders discussed her book, The Insiders' Game: How Elites Make War and Peace, with reviewer Paul Fritz. An Academy Forum moderated by Marylena Mantas, with a welcome from Robert Y. Shapiro.
ELIZABETH N. SAUNDERS is a Professor of Political Science at Columbia University and Director of the Saltzman Institute of War and Peace Studies. Her research and teaching interests focus on the domestic politics of international relations and U.S. foreign policy, especially the role of leaders, the presidency, and the politics of using force. Prior to joining Columbia, she was a Professor in the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University. She is also a non-resident senior fellow at the Brookings Institution.
PAUL FRITZ is Chair and Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science at Hofstra University. Dr. Fritz has published in the Journal of Politics, International Interactions, Foreign Policy Analysis and other venues on alliance formation, democratic imposition, and UN Security Council reform, among other issues. He is co-editor of a volume on the foreign policy of the George W. Bush administration and Evaluating the Obama Presidency: From Transformational Goals to Governing Realities (De Gruyter, 2024). Currently, his main research project examines how defeated states respond to war-ending settlements, with application to Russia in the post-Cold War era.
ROBERT Y. SHAPIRO is the Wallace S. Sayre Professor of Government in the Department of Political Science and Vice Dean and Professor of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University. He is President of The Academy of Political Science and Editor of Political Science Quarterly.
MARYLENA MANTAS is Associate and Managing Editor of Political Science Quarterly and Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science and Global Affairs at Sacred Heart University.
