Beyond Left, Right, and Center: The Politics of Gender and Ethnicity in Contemporary Germany, Christina Xydias

Christina Xydias’ monograph sets out to complicate a widely accepted narrative, namely that left-wing parties perform better at advancing women's interests generally and minoritized women's interests specifically. Xydias convincingly disaggregates the left-right party axis by introducing more granular ideological differences within and among parties. She argues that, particularly for minoritized women, intersecting politics of sex-gender and race-ethnicity confound the assumption that left-party families are more open to advancing their interests.

One of the major contributions of this study is its deft intertwining of theoretical and empirical analysis. Xydias combines a “within-country” study of German parties with cross-national data on parties’ variation in Organization of Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries. Nine testable theoretical expectations ground the empirical part of the book, establishing conditions under which parties indeed do advocate for women, while also showcasing that minoritized women find little substantive support across the whole party spectrum.
