Following the formal announcement of an impeachment inquiry into President Trump in 2019, Trump took to Twitter (now X) calling it a partisan “witch hunt” akin to an attempted coup. Looking at the last attempt at impeaching a sitting president, politicians and political commentators noted the Clinton impeachment was generally not supported by the public, viewed as overwhelmingly partisan, and harmful to the country and the same may be seen in the next presidential impeachment. However, as Alexander Hamilton describes in Federalist 65, this is the precise nature of impeachments: a political tool used to deal with political issues.
