An Academy of Political Science/Political Science Quarterly Conference Co-sponsored with Università di Siena, Columbia University, and the Italian Academy for Advanced Studies in America

Organized as two days of sessions with paper presentations and roundtable discussions, the conference gathered European and American decision-makers, scholars, and journalists to discuss the role of public opinion and mass media in foreign policy.

These and other questions were addressed:

  • How the end of the Cold War has changed the way the media portray or frame international events and, in particular, events which imply the use of force?
  • To what extent have changes in the international environment affected the way policymakers and the media interact?
  • How the media's treatment of events like those in Bosnia, Somalia, Albania, and the Gulf War have shaped public attitudes concerning the way foreign policy should be conducted?
  • Whether, now that the Cold War is over, public attitudes have been shaped to greater or lesser extents by events, party platforms, ideology, beliefs, and changes in the available information.
