Erdogan's Path to Authoritarianism: The Continuing Journey, Michael M. Gunter
There is no doubt that Recep Tayyip Erdogan has left a deep imprint on the Turkey of today. Whether one looks at domestic institutions or the country's foreign policy, there is no other leader in contemporary Turkish history, save the republic's founder Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, who comes close to the consequential role the sitting strongman has played. Nearly a quarter of a century into Erdogan's reign, the list of books available on him in English is growing. Soner Cagaptay and Gonul Tol, to mention two prominent Turkey watchers based in the United States, have made valuable contributions in past years. Other titles worth mentioning are The New Turkey and Its Discontents by Emre Caliskan and Simon A. Waldman, as well as Selim Koru's excellent New Turkey and the Far Right. I have also covered the republic's transformation in Turkey under Erdogan.
Michael M. Gunter's Erdogan's Path to Authoritarianism: The Continuing Journey is a welcome addition to the literature. Gunter is a seasoned observer, having researched and taught Turkish and Middle Eastern politics to generations of students since the 1970s. His is a readable and informed account of Turkey's evolution since the 2000s.
Though Erdogan is prominently in the book's title, this is not a classical biography. The volume
